Rowan County Public Library
Morehead, Kentucky
CMW worked with the Rowan County Library Board on the design of their new public library. Several building sites were considered by the Library Board, and with CMW‘s civil engineers and architects providing input on development cost, accessibility issues, long term growth and other site issues, the Board was able to choose a site off of State Route 32. The Library conveys a look in keeping with vernacular of the City of Morehead, with its appearance having a distinctive presence on the hill side site. CMW is challenged to create a functional cost effective design. Safety and security are key design concerns. The lobby will allow access of group meeting areas and the library, while allowing each to be secured individually. Library supervision by a limited staff is also a major focus. The main circulation desk is centrally located with an emphasis on providing direct visual access to all areas, especially Children and Teen spaces. Computers and reference stations will be located near the circulation desk for easy assistance and monitoring by the librarian. CMW Engineers provided a mechanical system that is energy efficient. Conservation systems will allow the building to be divided into individual zones. Each zone will have the capability to provide control for heat pumps during non-occupied hours and adjustment for evening / weekend functions within the facility. A building energy management system will be capable of overriding the individual unit controls for functions such as night set back and morning warm-up. The electrical design will include particular attention of illumination levels, and will follow the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) guidelines and applicable energy conservation codes. Fixtures with both direct and indirect components in reading and stack areas provides uniform illumination of ceiling and wall or shelving spaces, minimizing shadows and glare. Decorative accent lighting is incorporated into the design of childr
