Wilson Harlequin Farm
Montgomery, Alabama
Located in a small community outside Montgomery, Alabama, this private stable and riding facility is within view of the Owner’s residence. The convenience of having the barn just a short distance of the house was one of the factors that went into the overall master-planning for the facility. The stable includes: ten stalls, a wash stall, tack room, hay and bedding storage, as well as, an owner’s lounge. The lounge was a particularly important feature of the stable since the owners wanted to create a very comfortable and multifunctional space. The lounge has a separate exterior porch entrance which allows visitors and family to use the room as a gathering and social space. A window within the lounge allows users to watch riders in the Arena while relaxing within the conditioned space. A small kitchenette and bath further allow the space to be used by overnight guests. The indoor arena has access from both the exterior and directly from the stable. In order to maximize the day lighting and promotion of natural ventilation in this warm climate; electrically operated glazed overhead doors have been provided along the sidewalls of the area. These “window walls” can be raised when the weather permits to allow cooling breezes into the arena, yet still allow natural light into the ring when they are in the closed position. The stable is constructed from low maintenance masonry, laminated wood roof framing and custom fabricated steel stall fronts and doors. CMW’s services included farm masterplanning, architectural and engineering design of the stable and arena, as well as as-needed consultation with the contractor during construction.
